Journalism Class

Have students read a book that has a movie counterpart. Then have them watch the movie based on the book, either one that in theaters or just come out on DVD. Then for the assignment write a review comparing and contrasting the book and the movie while giving a review.

Film Class
Have students read a book, which also has a movie counterpart. Then have them watch the movie. Discuss how film adaptations can change the view of the book. Was their view of the book changed by watching the movie? How so? What are their recommendations?
An activity that would be fun in this type of class is to research the film itself. There are plenty of resources listen above that would help. Perhaps write to the author and get them to come and speak to the class.

English Class (11th grade)
Have students read the book, then write an SAT style essay analyzing the book for a grade. After finishing the book, have the students watch the movie! Great reward for finishing a sometimes tedious book!

Teen Tech Week (YALSA) or Teen Read Week
This is an extension idea for librarians or media specialists wanting to put together something for Teen Tech Week or Teen Read Week. Wouldn't it just be fun to have a book AND movie discussion group? Have teens read the book a few weeks prior to TTW or even the week before (watch out for those slow readers - give them ample time!). Then set a date and time, such as a Friday or Saturday to watch the movie. Afterwards discuss the movie and how it relates or doesn't relate to the movie. Have a display ready and books that other movies have been based on. Perhaps it will lead to more reading!!!

Celebrate an Author
Celebrate an author and his or her works. For example have the teens read all of Harry Potter books. Then have a Harry Potter Day at the library. Teens can dress up as their favorite character, check out the books, watch a Harry Potter Movie or play the latest Harry Potter game on the Playstation or just to color various coloring pages. There could be a wide range of activities for teens.
